Before doing anything follow the below mention steps on you device:-

After this follow the below mention guide to root your Galaxy S4 and Install custom recovery. Remember this guide only for the Galaxy S4 I9500 (Exynos version) users and not the I9505 (qualcomm version). So make sure first that you have the Galaxy S4 I9500 (Exynos version). You can confirm this at the booting screen itself or via “Settings -> More -> About Device”.

How to Root Samsung Galaxy S4 I9500 & Install Custom Recovery

Step 1. Install the Samsung Drivers on your Windows PC and enable USB debugging on your device.
Step 2. Now Download the ODIN flash tool and download Adam Kernel to root your Samsung Galaxy S4.
Step 3. Now Download the ClockworkMod Recovery on your Windows desktop, this will help you to install Custom recovery on your rooted Samsung Galaxy S4.
Step 4. Now lets start the rooting process. Turn off your device so that it can be entered in the Download Mode. Once the device id off hold down Volume Down, Center Home, and Power buttons together for about 5 seconds. When you see the warning screen, let go of all buttons then hit the Volume Up button to enter ODIN Download mode.
Step 5. Now you are on the Download mode, now run the ODIN application on your desktop that your download on Step2 and connect your device with the computer via USB cable.
Step 6. Now in ODIN screen choose PDA, then browse the Adam Kernel file that you download on step 2 (choose the file “GT-I9500_AdamKernel.V1.2.Odin.tar”). Next, ensure that the check boxes “Auto Reboot”, “F. Reset Time” and “PDA” are the only check boxes checked and the rest are not.
Step 7. Now hit the Start button form the ODIN application screen and rooting process will start and it will take some time. After this the phone should reboot on its own. After the phone restarts, you should see the “Superuser” application installed on your device and the phone already rooted automatically by this kernel. That’s it now your Galaxy S4 is rooted and now its time to install custom recovery on the device.
Step 8. To install the Custom Recovery, turn off the devic eagain enter in Download mode as you done on Step4. Once your are on Download mode, connect your device again with PC and run the ODIN application and this time you have to flash ClockworkMod Recovery file “recovery-clockwork-6.0.3.2-i9500.tar.md5” with the help of ODIN (Same as Step 6).
Step 9. Hit the “Start” button and wait a few seconds till it gets done and the phone restarts automatically.
Congratulation now your Galaxy S4 is rooted and custom recovery is installed on your device.
